City of Johnson City Residents

Recycling

Johnson City began its voluntary, curbside recycling program in 1989. Since that time, the City has recycled more than 131,200 tons of materials. Because of market fluctuations, some recycling guidelines have recently changed.

While the City is still able to recycle plastics marked with a 1 or a 2, those items are now limited to milk jugs, water bottles, juice containers, soda bottles, laundry detergent and fabric softener containers, bleach bottles, and windshield solvent bottles. Other items accepted include glass, cardboard, paper and aluminum drink cans. These guidelines apply to both curbside service and all five drop-off locations, which are conveniently located across the city.

Brush, Leaf, & Grass Collection

Brush collection takes place throughout the year but may be altered during leaf collection periods. The City defines brush as tree trimmings, shrubbery (with no roots), limbs, etc., generated by routine maintenance of a property by the homeowner.

The City’s annual fall leaf collection takes place from November to mid-December.  A minimum of two pickups should occur in each neighborhood during the leaf collection period. Residents are asked not to bag leaves and to pile leaves behind the curb (not in front of the curb or on the street).  Leaves will not be collected in alleys.  All leaf piles should be free of trash, debris and limbs or they will not be collected.

Household Waste & Hazardous Materials

The City of Johnson City collects bulk items on regularly scheduled intervals based on residential zones. These zones and schedule are the same as those for Brush pickup. There is no additional charge for this service. To find more information about recurring pick up times, please visit here. If you believe your pickup was missed, please contact 423-975-2700.

Additional information regarding household waste & hazardous materials may be found on the City website. Due to the numerous items, it is recommended check the website first and call if needed to figure out how to dispose your waste.
